A LWIR thermal imaging camera is a device that uses long-wave infrared radiation (typically in the 8 to 14 micron wavelength range) for thermal imaging. It is a variant of infrared thermography that is designed to detect and display the heat distribution on the surface of an object. Compared with infrared thermal imaging cameras in other wavelength ranges (such as mid-wave infrared, short-wave infrared), long-wave infrared thermal imaging cameras have some characteristics and advantages. First, LWIR radiation is able to penetrate fog, smog and some gases in most cases, making thermal imaging effective in harsh environmental conditions. Second, long-wave infrared radiation can better penetrate non-metallic materials such as glass, plastic, and cloth, making observations without special handling or removal of obscuring objects.
