Low carbon cement is a type of cement that reduces the carbon footprint of concrete by using less clinker, the most energy- and carbon-intensive part of the cement manufacturing process. Low carbon cement can be produced by adding more limestone, using cement replacement materials like fly ash, silica fume, and slag, or implementing low-impact changes to the production processes and mix designs3. Low carbon cement should behave identically to traditional cement in terms of performance and cost23. Low carbon cement can lower the CO2 emissions of concrete by 10 percent to 100 percent.
