Synopsis
A pearl is a hard glistening object produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk or another animal, such as a conulariid. Just like the shell of a mollusk, a pearl is composed of calcium carbonate (mainly aragonite or a mixture of aragonite and calcite) in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes, known as baroque pearls, can occur. The finest quality natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries. Because of this, pearl has become a metaphor for something rare, fine, admirable and valuable.
The global Natural and Cultured Pearls market was valued at US$ million in 2023 and is anticipated to reach US$ million by 2030, witnessing a CAGR of % during the forecast period 2024-2030.
According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the global aquatic product farming volume has shown an increasing trend from 1959 to 2021. According to preliminary statistics, the global aquatic product farming volume in 2021 was about 128 million tons. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022 shows that total global aquaculture initial sales in 2020 was approximately US$265 billion, with farm sales estimated to total US$281.5 billion. Of the total aquaculture production, 87.5 million tons were produced of aquatic animals, mainly for human consumption; 35.1 million tons of algae, including food and non-food uses; 700 tons of shellfish and decorative pearls. Asian countries account for 70% of the global aquatic animal production in fisheries and aquaculture, followed by the Americas, Europe, Africa and Oceania.
