Synopsis
Orbital angular momentum fiber is a few-mode fiber that uses the orbital angular momentum of photons to achieve mode division multiplexing. The orbital angular momentum of a photon describes the characteristic of the photon rotating around the propagation axis, making the phase wavefront of the light spiral. Different orbital angular momentum modes are orthogonal to each other, allowing multiple signals to be transmitted simultaneously at the same frequency, thereby increasing the information capacity of optical fiber communications. There are two types of orbital angular momentum fibers: quantum and statistical. Quantum state orbital angular momentum optical fiber is generated by cyclotron oscillation electron radiation, which can provide a new dimension of physical transmission and is theoretically expected to break through the traditional MIMO capacity limit. Statistical orbital angular momentum fiber is generated by a special antenna or antenna array, which is essentially beam forming. In theory, it does not break through the MIMO capacity boundary, but it can reduce system complexity.
