A rangefinder is a radio navigation device that measures the slant distance between an aircraft and a ground transponder. It consists of an airborne interrogator and a ground answering station. A method of determining the distance between the two by measuring the time it takes for radio waves to travel back and forth from an aircraft to a radio station.
