Synopsis
Polytetrahydrofuran is an important polymer, a white waxy solid that is easily soluble in alcohols, esters, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons, and insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons and water. When the temperature exceeds room temperature, it will become a transparent liquid. The degree of polymerization of this compound can change under different conditions. For example, the degree of polymerization at room temperature is usually around 100. The degree of polymerization also increases when the temperature increases, and it becomes a high polymer when it exceeds its melting point. Polytetrahydrofuran is also used as an emulsifier for emulsion polymerization, which can form a block copolymer of polyoxyethylene-polytetrahydrofuran. This copolymer is used as an emulsifier for emulsion polymers in the paper, textile, detergent and cosmetic industries.
