Synopsis
A varicap is a diode designed to take advantage of the voltage dependent capacitance of a reverse biased p-n junction. The varactor operates in reverse bias, so no DC current flows through the device. The amount of reverse bias controls the thickness of the depletion region and therefore the junction capacitance of the varactor. The capacitance variation characteristic depends on the doping profile. In general, for abrupt junction profiles, the depletion region thickness is proportional to the square root of the applied voltage, while the capacitance is inversely proportional to the depletion region thickness. Therefore, the capacitance is inversely proportional to the square root of the applied voltage. Capacitance changes are more nonlinear for hyperabrupt junction profiles, but hyperabrupt varactors have larger capacitance changes and can operate at lower voltages. All diodes exhibit this variable junction capacitance, but varactors are made to take advantage of this effect and increase capacitance variation.
