The pressure created by excess cerebrospinal fluid can inhibit the normal functioning of the brain, leading to brain damage and even death. Some of these conditions are associated with elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) or intracranial pressure greater than 20 mmHg due to obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) outflow. External Ventricular Drainage (EVD) is one of the most commonly performed neurosurgery procedures: more than 25,000 EVDs are inserted each year in the US alone.
