Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL for short) is a special type of laser in which the laser is emitted perpendicularly to the top surface. VCSEL is a compound semiconductor laser, and its manufacturing process is different from that of general semiconductor lasers. VCSELs have a circular or square vertical cavity with the active region on the upper surface of the cavity. Light exits the top surface via two distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) or a combination of a DBR and an output coupler (OC).
